A pair of 1-0 losses to Smithville (18-2) has seemingly been the only thing stopping the Platte County girls’ soccer team (17-3) as the Lady Pirates have won 16 of their last 18 games with the postseason around the corner.
Two of the Lady Pirates’ three losses have come to the Lady Warriors, along with a 1-0 loss to Staley (12-5) early in the year. Platte County has posted 14 shutout victories so far this season, most recently coming on senior night against Ruskin (1-10) on May 5.
In the last home game of her Platte County career, Riley Smith ended on a high note. The senior leading-scorer finished with a hat-trick in the 10-0 annihilation over the Lady Eagles.
Smith started her three-goal outing 3:01 into the contest and added her second score on a right-footed kick on a corner kick pass from Morgan Stewart with 31:34 left in the first half to give Platte County a 4-0 lead. Aleah Dixon and Mackenzie Shields filled in the other two scores between Smith’s second and third goals.
Dixon knocked down another goal in the ninth minute on a pass from Giada Cucchiara. Smith completed the hat-trick with 27:35 on the clock when the senior knocked down Platte County’s sixth goal of the game from the 9-yard line.
Avery Webster connected with Sloan Kassen and the junior kicked the ball from the 10-yard line to the goal in the 22nd minute. Rylee Burris and Cucchiara closed out the game with more Lady Pirate scores to give them a 10-0 win.
Platte County has one more regular season game at Grandview (9-10-1) on May 10 before the Class 3 District 8 Tournament at Van Horn High School. The Lady Pirates will be the No. 2 seed and open up against No. 7 seed Winnetonka (4-11-1) at 1:30 p.m. on May 14.
