Lady Pirates finish the calendar year strong, one victory shy of last seasons win total

Entering the New Year with one less victory than all of last season, the Platte County girls’ basketball team (7-2) is on its longest winning streak since 2018 with five in a row.

The Platte County bench has had plenty to cheer for early on this season as it sits at a 7-2 record entering the New Year.

Starting the season with alternating its first two wins and losses to start 2-2, Platte County has won every game since by an average margin of victory of 13.2 points. In the Lady Pirates’ most recent triumph, they defeated St. Pius X (2-4) 51-31 on Dec. 21.

The first half was tight before Platte County pulled away in the final two quarters. Leading 11-8 after the opening eight minutes, the Lady Pirates progressively extended the lead until reaching a 20-point margin in the fourth.

Reese Pickett scored a season-high 15 points when she shot 50 percent from deep and 58.3 percent from the field, along with four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Addy Schlake was the only other Lady Pirate to score double digits as she finished with 12 points, while Lydia Doole had eight points and Joslyn Hupp had six points.

Platte County has yet to play a conference game but that will change in its next game, which is against Raytown (8-1) on Jan. 3. The Lady Pirates will enter the New Year with their highest points per game rate since 2019, averaging 43.6, and allowing only 35.2 points per game, on pace for the best in more than 15 years.
