The Park Hill girls’ soccer team (0-7) was in a battle at home when a late goal by Raymore-Peculiar (1-3) halted the Lady Trojans’ hope of breaking the win barrier for the first time this season on April 5.
The Lady Panthers struck first in the opening half, but Park Hill freshman Taylor Quigley made the first goal of her young career with 9:37 left in the first half. Both teams had some chances late in the half to add to the scoreboard, but went into the break tied 1-1.
In the second half, Park Hill controlled the time of possession. The Lady Trojans had the ball on their side of the field most of the final 40:00 and had a few shots on goal, but came up short of taking the lead.
“We have been hitting pretty hard on connecting our passes, from our defense to our mids to our forwards,” Park Hill head soccer coach Makenzie Heavey said. “We’ve been spending a lot of time on that in practice, and we did really well with it tonight, we just need to reward ourselves in the end.”
In the final minutes, Raymore-Peculiar regained possession when it got loose on its side of the field. With 3:54 on the clock, a Lady Panther slipped a goal past Park Hill freshman goalkeeper Izzy Amos to regain the lead.
The Lady Trojans had less than four minutes left to try to tie and extend the game. With 10 seconds left, Park Hill junior Kenzie David had a shot on goal but the Raymore-Peculiar goalie caught the ball and the Lady Panthers won.
“We made some good progress, we made some good combinations and knocked the ball pretty well. We just need to find a way to score and find the way to find the back of the net,” Heavey said.
Park Hill has had some struggles offensively so far this season, going scoreless in three games and only scoring multiple goals in one contest. The Lady Trojans also fell to Lee’s Summit West (5-0) on April 8.
“We just have to take it one game at a time, one half at a time and it will come. We have had some tough teams and some tough games to start the season, we just have to keep plugging away at it,” Heavey said.
