Trojan tennis topples Panthers in early season matchup

In the latest showdown between the rival Park Hill schools, the Trojans toppled the Panther boys’ tennis team 7-2.

Park Hill’s Tommy Matthys has helped lead the Trojans to a 6-1 start to the season, including a 7-2 victory over Park Hill South.

The match started at Park Hill South High School on April 6, but the rain conditions halfway through made the contest postponed. When both teams were at St. Joseph Central for a mutual tournament the next day, they decided to finish the match on April 7.

Park Hill won four of the six singles matches and all three doubles matches. Tommy Matthys took down Timmy Tasler 8-2 and Ethan Slaggie shut out Ryan Kempto, 8-0.

In the number three and four matches, Park Hill South evened the series with Noah Patel and Jack Arnold coming out on top. Patel defeated Kobe Smith 8-5 and Arnold beat Will Kirtley 8-3.

The final two singles matches were won by the Trojans, both ending with scores of 8-3. Eli Stammler matched up with Ryan Murray and Tristan Houchin matched up with Miles Bingham.

In the doubles matches, Matthys and Smith took down Tasler and Patel 8-3 before Slaggie and Stammler defeated Kempto and Murray 8-4. Kirtley and Houchin teamed up against Arnold and Bingham, winning 8-5.

So far into the spring season Park Hill is 6-1 on the year, starting when it won the Platte County Tournament on March 30. The Trojans’ sole defeat came against the 2021 Class 1 State Champion Barstow in the first round of the Mid-Missouri Invitational, and then they won the back draw for 5th place on April 9.
