Mid-Buchanan scores in bunches to beat West Platte

The struggles in KCI Conference play continued for West Platte with a 49-0 loss to state-ranked Mid-Buchanan on Friday, Oct. 11.

The Class 1 No. 4-ranked Dragons scored three touchdowns in the first quarter and third quarter and got the turbo clock in motion.

The Dragons (7-1, 5-1 KCI) ran for six touchdowns against the Bluejays, which fell to 1-7 and 0-6.

The only non-rushing score for Mid-Buchanan, a Class 1 semifinalist last year, was Javon Noyes to Caiden Bailey early in the first quarter.

Mid-Buchanan led 14-0 after TJ Runyan’s 33-yard touchdown with seven minutes to go in the first period.

Twice over the remainder of the first half the Bluejays put themselves in position to score but came up empty. Quarterback Dublin Carnahan connected with Brayden Cogan to move to the Dragons’ 15-yard line but the drive ended on a turnover on downs.

Mid-Buchanan turned that into points when Noyes scored on a 6-yard run to make it 20-0.

In the second quarter, the Bluejays moved down to the 35-yard line after a long pass by Carnahan to Cogan again. A pass interference call moved the ball to the 20-yard line, but the drive ended with a turnover on downs again.

Mid-Buchanan took a 28-0 lead into the half after Runyan scored on a 14-yard run. That touchdown came after a fumble recovery by the Dragons.

The Dragons scored three times in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.

Christian Scaggs, Rawlins Brant and Runyan all had touchdown runs. Brant’s was set up by an interception.

Carnahan completed 3 of 19 passes for West Platte for 90 yards. All of the receiving yards and catches were by Cogan.

Brandon James ran for 44 of the Bluejays’ 68 yards.

Cogan was the leading tackler with 10, while Mason Montez had nine.

West Platte will close out the regular season and look to snap a seven-game losing streak on Friday, Oct. 25 at Plattsburg.

The Tigers are 3-5 overall and have lost five straight since a 42-21 win against North Platte on Sept. 13. Since then, Plattsburg hasn’t scored more than seven points and have lost the last two games by a combined score of 103-0. In fairness to Plattsburg, the losses have come against Mid-Buchanan and Lathrop, both state ranked.

The rivalry between Plattsburg and West Platte has been one-sided lately with the Tigers winning the past eight. The last win for West Platte in the series was a 45-0 triumph in 2012.
