Mistakenly released suspect still at large

Platte County Sheriff’s Office authorities are still on the lookout for an inmate accidentally released from the detention center in Platte City last week.

According to Major Erik Holland, the investigation into how the suspect was released is still ongoing.

What is known is that Jae’veon Marquice Mitchel Locke, 21, was “inadvertently released from the Platte County Jail on the evening of (Thursday) April 20,” according to a release issued last week by the sheriff’s office. Locke had been transferred to Platte County from Jackson County due to several misdemeanor Platte County warrants.

Holland said the transfer of a suspect between counties in the same state to clear warrants prior to extradition to another state is common practice.

Locke is currently wanted by Wyandotte County, Kan. on charges related to a shooting in Kansas City, Kan. On Wednesday, April 5, Locke was allegedly involved in a shootout with Kansas City, Kan. officers in the 1800 block of Wood Avenue in KCK. Several of the suspects in the undercover fentanyl purchase sting as well as three narcotics officers were wounded in the shootout.

In a statement, Kansas City, Kan. chief of police Karl Oakman called the mistaken release “unfortunate.” KCK police are also involved in the hunt for Locke.

The Platte County Sheriff’s Office is working with the United States Marshals Service to locate Locke.

Anyone with information about Mr. Locke’s whereabouts is asked to contact the United States Marshals Service, the Platte County Sheriff’s Office, or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
