Second District Commissioner Joe Vanover will face a challenge in the Republican primary in August.
Melissa Steele Moran has announced her run for the second district seat. Moran is the owner of Senior Helpers for more than 15 years.
“I want to cultivate relationships that actively benefit the Platte County citizens,” Moran said in the release announcing her candidacy. “At times I have felt underrepresented at a local level, and I want to change that for people. I want to serve the community I live in and continue to make this county a great place to live. This is not a political stepping stone for me.”
With many years of leadership experience Moran believes she can bring fresh ideas and positive change to the county.

“Platte County is one of the fastest growing counties in the State of Missouri, and we must be part of that process,” she said. “I will be active in assessing options and make the best decision for our local communities and our futures.”
Moran, a resident in the northern district of Platte County, grew up on a gravel road in the Mid-Buchanan School District, but has made Platte County her home for more than 36 years. Married, she has two adult children and eight grandchildren.
Moran currently serves as president of the Parkville Area Chamber and EDC, president of a networking group of almost 200 members, Northland Professionals in Aging, and is a member of many other local organizations in making a positive impact for our community. Additionally, Moran serves her church through teaching the Next Steps Course.
After being asked to run by former Parkville Alderman, Greg Plumb, Moran was asked what her husband thought of the idea of her representing Platte County in the capacity of District 2 Commissioner.
“My husband has asked me for years if we needed to move to the city limits of Parkville since he has called me Mayor Moran our whole lives,” Moran said. “His response this time was “Can’t believe it took so long for people to ask you.”
