Murder suspect shot in Platte County

Neighborhoods just south of Platte City had a earlier this week when a police pursuit from Kansas City, Kan. concluded with a fatal shooting in Platte County.

A 26-year-old man suspected in a homicide in KCK was shot and killed by police on Tuesday night, May 3. Mekiah Harris was a suspect in the Sunday, May 1 murder of a 33-year-old man and the injury of two other people.

The incident Tuesday started on the Kansas side, with Harris leading police on a high-speed, wrong-way chase on Interstate 435.

The pursuit continued in Missouri, with the Platte County Sheriff’s Office, the Missouri Highway Patrol and Kansas City Police picking up at the state line. Stop sticks were deployed and Harris ditched his vehicle at around Northwest 132nd Street and Running Horse Road near a residential area.

Police surrounded Harris in the woods, while residents hid inside nearby homes, and Harris was shot and killed. No one else was injured.

The Platte County Prosecutor’s Office and Sheriff’s Office are investigating the shooting.
