Desiree Spears had recurring acne as a teenager and young adult, so she visited an esthetician in search of a solution. In a tranquil spa with calming scents, sounds and a knowledgeable professional who could identify a working course of action, Spears found not only the skincare answers she was looking for, but also a new passion for esthetics. She left that day set on a new career path.
Spears attended esthetics school, earned her licensure and worked for 10 years in esthetics at several upscale spas in Western New York. In 2017, she along with her husband, Brian, and two children William, 5, and Avana, 4, moved to Missouri to be closer to Spears’ parents who reside in Knob Noster.
They found a home in Platte City, and it wasn’t long after arriving that Spears decided she wanted to share her passion for skincare with the surrounding community.
Before moving to New York, Spears graduated from Park University with a bachelor’s degree in business. She used the management knowledge she gained from her undergrad and experience working accounting for the government, to achieve her dream of merging business and esthetics.
Late last year, Spears opened KC Esthetics Spa in Platte City at 303 Marshall Road, Suite 2. The spa offers treatments including facials, peels, dermaplaning, lash extensions, lash lifts, waxing, body treatments and microblading.
Opening her spa in Platte City was an easy decision, Spears said. The suite was close to home, the community was growing, and she saw demand for an esthetics spa.
“There really wasn’t a lot as far as esthetics services go in the area,” Spears said. “I wanted to create something special and intimate where people can feel pampered and get that personalized one-on-one attention and leave just feeling reinvigorated and recharged.”
Clients enter Spears’ spa and are welcomed by the same calming sounds and smells that first made Spears fall in love with esthetics.
“When they come in they should expect relaxation and nothing but the best personalized attention,” Spears said. “I really strive to give them the best experience possible.”
Spears stays up-to-date on the latest beauty trends through membership in Associated Skin Care Professionals and by frequently attending innovative classes offered by the spa’s chosen skincare line: Image Skincare.
First-time clients of KC Esthetics Spa are welcomed with a full consultation and analysis of their skin types and conditions. Spears then provides personalized treatment plan recommendations. Her most popular treatments requested from clientele include anti-aging facials, dermaplaning (or the removal of peach fuzz) and eyelash extensions.
Spears said that the community has been supportive, and that customers have found her through Facebook, word of mouth and referrals. Her involvements in Moms of Preschoolers, Platte City Schools PTA and the Platte City Area Chamber of Commerce have helped her with advertising as well, she said.
“The Chamber of Commerce has been amazing in getting to know other local businesses and other people of the community that have been able to help promote me,” Spears said. “It’s been really welcoming. I just feel really blessed and happy about how things are moving along and business has been good.”
