Park Hill, Platte County compete in 49th Annual Winnetonka Tourney

KANSAS CITY – The 49th Annual Winnetonka Volleyball Tournament was competitive as usual, and Park Hill (6-5-2) came away slightly better than Platte County did on Sept. 16.

Park Hill and Platte County met bright and early for the opening match of pool play at 8 a.m. The Lady Pirates took the first set in extras, 27-25, and the Lady Trojans tied the match with a 25-15 victory.

There wasn’t a third set since pool play only has two for bracket seedings, regardless of the outcome. Park Hill sophomore Parker Kimball had eight kills and two digs as Platte County senior Avery Walter ended with 10 digs.

The Lady Pirates and the Lady Trojans went on to tie in their next pool play matches as well. Platte County took on Raymore-Peculiar (5-5-1) and Park Hill matched up with Fort Osage (5-4-1) as both matches went 1-1.

Park Hill opened up bracket play with a pair of 2-0 sweeps over Raymore-Peculiar and Jefferson City (8-8). In those two matches, Boston Wand and Kimball had six blocks each in addition to Addyson Staples’ 16 kills and nine digs.

Park Hill advanced to play Grain Valley (9-3), which entered the match with four straight sweeps in the tournament. The Lady Eagles extended that hot streak with another 2-0 win to send the Lady Trojans home with a loss.

Kimball finished with nine kills, while Emily Watson added 11 digs. Junior Karis Barton blocked three balls and Emily Jones dished out nine assists.

Following pool play, Platte County was eliminated by a sweep against St. Pius X (12-4). The Lady Pirates scored 17 points in set one and 16 points in set two.

Tatianna Murray had four kills, three blocks and four digs in the match. Carissa Bacon dished out six assists and Walter added nine digs.

Park Hill will have its senior night against Oak Park (1-6) on Sept. 21. Platte County will head to St. Joseph to face a struggling Central squad (3-9-2) that has only won one of its last 11 matches on the same day.
