Park Hill South continued its dominant run in postseason play on Thursday, Oct. 10.
The Panthers picked up a 5-0 win over Park Hill at the Northland Racquet Club in North Kansas City.
The win extended Park Hill South’s district championship run to 13 years in a row, which featured the team opening the year losing a returning three-time state semifinalist.
Chloe Norris won 6-0 and 6-0 against Elise McFee at No. 1 singles, while Vivien Hamilton won by the same score facing Jada Ray at No. 2 singles.
Nicki Matthews won in two sets, 6-2 and 6-0, against Audrey Lynn at No. 3 singles, while Taylor Brown posted a 6-1 and 6-2 win against Sanjana Kotha.
While the No. 5 and No. 6 singles were being played, Norris and Hamilton picked up a win over McFee and Ray in doubles to end the match early.
Park Hill finished the year 8-5.
It marked the first time since 2012 the two rivals met in the district finals.
Park Hill South 5, Platte County 0
The top-seeded Panthers swept Platte County in a semifinal match up on Tuesday, Oct. 8 in Riverside.
The Pirates registered only one point in the loss, finishing the season 4-9.
Park Hill South built a 3-0 lead in doubles with wins coming from Chloe Norris/Vivien Hamilton; Sydney Dial/Nicki Matthews and Taylor Brown/Jacklynn Pham.
Norris and Hamilton won in singles to end the contest early.
Park Hill 5, Staley 2
The Trojans won a district semifinal game against Staley on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at Barry Park.
Park Hill got wins from Audrey Lynn/Elizabeth Appel at No. 2 doubles and Sanjana Kotha/Grace Yu won at No. 3 doubles to make it 2-1 early.
Kotha, Appel and Yu all won in straight sets in singles to end the match early.
Individual districts
Park Hill South had two of the top doubles teams in the Class 2 District 16 tournament for the second year in a row.
The Panthers claimed first and second in the doubles flight with Chloe Norris and Vivien Hamilton winning in three sets over teammates Nicki Matthews and Sydney Dial on Friday, Oct. 11 at Park Hill South High School.
Norris is advancing to the state playoffs in doubles for the fourth straight year. She went twice with her sister, Abby, before playing with Anne Saunders last year.
Norris and Hamilton, a freshman, won 6-1 in the opener before Matthews and Dial won 7-6 in the second set. In the deciding set, Norris and Hamilton won 6-2 to cap off a 3-0 day for the top seed.
In the semifinals, Norris/Hamilton won 6-1 and 6-0 against Park Hill’s Jada Ray and Audrey Lynn. Dial and Matthews, the No. 3 seed, beat the second-seeded duo from St. Joseph Central, 6-1 and 6-1, to move to the finals.
Both of Platte County doubles teams were eliminated in the opening round.
Park Hill’s Elise McFee took second in singles, falling 6-0 and 6-1 to Staley’s Claire Thimgan, the No. 1 seed.
McFee dispatched Park Hill South’s Jacklynn Pham in semifinals to secure her spot in the state playoffs. McFee opened with a 7-6 (7-1) and 6-0 win over Caitlin Evans of St. Joseph Central in the opening round.
Pham pulled off two upsets to move to the semifinals, opening with a win over Oak Park’s Summer Murphy, the No. 6 seed, 6-1 and 6-3. In the quarterfinals, the 11th seeded Pham won in three sets against Platte County’s Karlee Chase, 7-5, 1-6 and 6-4.
