Parkville makes plans for smaller parks

The City of Parkville is moving forward with park plans for development of Watkins and Adams parks located near Main Street.

Director of public works Alysen Abel presented the plans for $50,000 in improvements to the neighborhood parks at the Tuesday, March 2 meeting of the board of aldermen. The improvement plans for Watkins Park were amended and approved unanimously. Abel said the city awaits word from the Platte County Parks Department on an Outreach grant applied for earlier this year.

Changes to the master plan included relocation of a proposed parking area due to grading issues, as well as some trail and shelter building re-configurations based upon the relocation of the parking lot.

According to the staff report, a vast green space at the park will remain intact. In the first phase of renovation, the parking lot will be relocated closer to the road, fencing will be used to better define the park, a small playground and a loop trail will be installed around the perimeter, and the shelter house will be relocated closer to the proposed parking area.

The ultimate master plan will include upgrades to the playground area, upgraded shelter, resurfacing of the basketball courts and enhancements to the stream corridor.

Alderman Marc Sportsman suggested the city ensure it has a contingency plan for funding should the county grant be denied.

Additionally, the board approved a $30,000 plan to improve the roundabout on Busch Drive in English Landing Park.

The new design includes a three-foot wall around the perimeter, with an eight-foot tall waterfall. There will be a curb between the wall along the street level.
