A Kansas City man accused of trafficking in stolen identities bonded out of Platte County detention just in time to find himself back in custody in Jackson County, charged with robbery and armed criminal action.
Jeremy Phelps, 33, faces Platte County charges of trafficking in stolen identities, tampering with a motor vehicle and resisting a traffic stop. His $5,000 bond was reduced and Phelps bonded out in early September. He was scheduled to appear before Judge Ann Hansbrough on Tuesday, Sept. 10 but at the time the court was informed he had been arrested in Jackson County and remained in custody there.
According to court documents, a deputy noticed a dark Chevy Malibu backing out of the driveway of a residence near Northwest 72nd Street and Winter Road on Thursday, May 16. Knowing the residence was associated with narcotics, the officer attempted to pull over the vehicle due to a dim license plate light. Before the deputy could get out of his vehicle, the Malibu took off at a high rate of speed. The deputy began pursuit with the chase heading down Highway 9 and to Barry Road and onto Ambassador Drive. Speeds reached 95 miles per hour in a 35 mph zone. The road ended on Old Stagecoach Road and the pursuit continued onto a walking trail. The Malibu re-entered the roadway on Line Creek Parkway, heading south in the northbound lanes, eventually leaving the roadway again to travel through back yards until it went down a steep embankment and became stuck off Liston Road.
Phelps fled the vehicle and in the empty Malibu police found dozens of identification cards, credit and debit cards and social security cards as well as a laptop, blank checks, handgun magazines and 9 mm ammunition.
The car was reported as stolen, however the owner knew Phelps and said he stayed at the owner's home and had borrowed the car in the past. The owner was able to provide Phelps' cell phone number and police traced the phone's location to the route of the pursuit. Calls were also made to Phelps' girlfriend just before and after the chase.
During a search of the vehicle, more stolen identification, cards and materials were found, in addition to counterfeiting materials and personal artifacts belonging to Phelps. He was also connected to an armed robbery investigation in Kansas City. He remains in custody in Jackson County on those charges, held on $10,000 cash-only bond.
