Pirates bring home hardware, win first conference title since 2017

It took half a decade to reclaim a conference title, but when the Blue Division Golf Meet came to a close at Shiloh Springs Golf Course on May 2, the Platte County boys’ golf team was champion.

The Platte County boys’ golf team won its first conference title when the Pirates took first place at the Kansas City Suburban Conference Blue Division Championship Meet at Shiloh Springs Golf Course on May 2.

The last time the Pirates won a conference title was in 2017, but the Kansas City Suburban Conference Blue Division Championship plaque has returned to Platte County. Trevor Short, the head coach for the Pirates’ golf team, told the Platte County Citizen how they were able to get it done.

“We stepped up to the challenge of competitors and made sure every shot counted. We knew if we could keep our bad shots at a minimum and recover from those shots, we would have a chance to put us into contention,” Short said.

Platte County had three first-team all-conference players: Parker Amos, Jake Kingery and Dylan Mitchell. Amos finished second overall with 78 strokes, Kingery ended with 88 strokes to finish in sixth place and Mitchell shot a 90 to earn seventh place.

“It was a tough battle for all the schools today and having the championship come down to a tie breaker with the fifth score made it even more exciting. We have fallen to Smithville and Kearney multiple times this season and to finally come out on top was amazing. This will give us some great momentum going into the postseason,” Short said.

Platte County had a rough outing in its match before conference on the Paradise Pointe Golf Course on April 27. None of the Pirates finished with or below par, which was 36, on the day.

“These were not the results that we were looking for today. We struggled a bit here and there, but if we can get a few of those high numbers off the scorecard we will be in better shape,” Short said.

Carson Childers was the top-finisher when he finished with 45 strokes, followed by Amos with 46 strokes. Kingery had 49 strokes, Mitchell finished with 55 strokes and Jackson Gabbert ended with 56 strokes.

Platte County will travel to Tiffany Greens for its final match of the regular season on May 4 against North Kansas City and Truman. The District Tournament will be on May 9 at Drumm Farm Golf Club in Independence, MO.
