Pirates cruise past Raytown South

Nate Walls found the end zone four times on the ground in the Pirates’ third straight victory as the Platte County football team defeated Raytown South 44-8 on Oct. 15.

Walls scored three of his four rushing touchdowns in the first half – two of which happened in the opening quarter. The junior started the contest with a 20-yard score on the Pirates’ first possession and after Jared Parsons connected with Carter Salzman for a 15-yard passing touchdown, Walls crossed the goal-line for 1 yard with 1:39 remaining in the first quarter to extend Platte County’s lead, 19-0.

Walls carried the ball 24 times for 108 yards and scored his third touchdown of the contest with 10:27 remaining in the second quarter. Parsons rushed in for the 2-point conversion to give Platte County a 27-point lead.

The Pirates’ impressive 10 quarter streak of not allowing an opposing offense to score was snapped midway through the second quarter. Raytown South responded with a touchdown and 2-point conversion with 4:55 remaining in the first half.

Platte County’s offense answered with a late touchdown in the opening half. With 10 seconds remaining, Parsons found Brody Fulk in the end zone to give the Pirates a 35-8 lead at the break.

In the third quarter, the Pirates took down Cardinal running back Chris Watson in their own end zone, resulting in a safety. Walls capped off the impressive outing with a 9-yard rushing touchdown with 8:22 remaining in the third quarter.

Parsons finished the night by completing eight of his 19 pass attempts for 128 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for 37 yards on six carries. Salzman ended the contest with three receptions for 40 yards and a touchdown, and Tristen Magusen had one catch for 40 yards.

The Pirate defense forced one fumble and Landon Fulk intercepted Raytown South’s quarterback.

Platte County has one regular season game remaining when it hosts Lansing (Kan.) on Oct. 22. The Pirates currently hold a 6-2 record on the fall season and have the second-best record among teams in the Class 5 District 8 Tournament, which begins on Oct. 29.
