For the second consecutive week, the Platte County football team shut out its opponent when the Pirates won in demanding fashion on their homecoming, taking down Winnetonka 35-0 on Oct. 8.
Pirates’ senior quarterback Jared Parsons found the end zone twice – once through the air and once on the ground – starting with a 15-yard pass to Cole Rhoden in the opening quarter. Parsons also ran in for a 3-yard score with 38 seconds remaining in the first half to give Platte County a 21-0 lead at the break.
The Pirates’ defense forced two Griffin turnovers, one of which was returned for a touchdown. After leading 7-0 in the first quarter, Garrett Smith intercepted a Winnetonka pass and returned it for six Platte County points.
In the third quarter, Nate Walls and Carter Salzman each scored a rushing touchdown to give the Pirates a 35-point lead and eventual victory. Walls ran into the end zone for 36 yards and Salzman rushed in for 23 yards.
Walls ended with 113 rushing yards on 22 carries and Salzman ran the ball two times for 27 yards. Parsons completed six of his 19 pass attempts for 105 yards and a touchdown, with half of his completions being caught by Rhoden for 60 yards.
The Pirates have shut out their opponents in each of their last three victories and Platte County hasn’t given up more than seven points in any of its wins this fall. Platte County (5-2) will head to Raytown South (0-6) for its last regular season road game on Oct. 15.
