The Platte County football (4-5) team won the battle in dominating fashion against William Chrisman (3-6) in the regular season finale on Oct. 21 and the Pirates will have a chance to win the war in the postseason matchup with the Bears on Oct. 28.
With the seedings of the Class 5 District 8 Tournament riding on the final game of the regular season, the Pirate victory gave them the No. 3 seed in the tournament as they will host the sixth-seeded Bears in the opening round. While both squads are now White Division opponents, this was the first matchup since August 21, 2015, when the Pirates won 39-18.
Dylan Zimmerman tossed his first of four touchdown passes in the first 4:12 of the game when the senior connected with Dawsen Mizell for an 11-yard score. The Bears tied the game up at seven midway through the opening quarter before the Pirates rattled off 35 straight points.
Chandavian Bradley brought in two offensive touchdowns for the first time in his career as the senior’s only two catches ended up in scores. Bradley had a 34-yard touchdown reception with 41 seconds left in the first quarter, followed by a 62-yard score with 1:07 left in the half to give Platte County a 35-7 lead at the break.
Between Bradley’s touchdowns, Zimmerman ran in from 1-yard out and completed a pass to Mizell for a 12-yard score. Mizell was the second leading receiver for the Pirates, finishing the day with four receptions for 57 yards and two touchdowns.
Nate Walls ran in for a 1-yard touchdown with 6:18 left in the third quarter to push the margin to 35 points, which resulted in a fourth quarter running clock in the Pirates’ favor for the first time this fall due to the lead. The Bears scored with 38 seconds left in the game to give them 14 points.
Zimmerman had an efficient night as the senior completed 19 of his 23 passes for 269 yards and four scores, along with three rushes for 20 yards and a touchdown. Walls had 14 rush attempts for 81 yards and a score.
After an uncharacteristic 1-4 start to the fall, Platte County closed out the regular season with three wins in its last four games. If the Pirates defeat the Bears in the first round of districts, they will head to Oak Park (7-2) for the semifinals on Nov. 4.
