BELTON – Since dropping back-to-back games, the Platte County football team (5-2) put together two straight wins by defeating Belton (4-3) 42-7 on Oct. 6.
Platte County scored in all four quarters, starting with an 11-yard rushing touchdown by Adam Gilser in the first. Dawsen Mizell – who finished with three scores – brought in a 12-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter and the Pirates went into the lock room up 14-0.
Platte County put the game away in the second half, forcing a quick punt and needing only four plays of offense to push the lead to 21-0. Mizell brought in another touchdown on an 80-yard bomb from Rocco Marriott.
Belton finally got on the scoreboard with a 1-yard rush in the final moments of the third quarter. Aiden Watts intercepted a pass and returned in 18 yards for the first touchdown of the fourth quarter, making the score 28-7.
Marriott added two more passing touchdowns to pull out the 42-7 win. The Platte County sophomore threw a 21-yard pass to Brayden Stevens and Mizell brought in a 23-yard pass.
Marriott completed 50 percent of his passes for 202 yards and four touchdowns, in addition to 52 rushing yards. Mizell had a monster game, bringing in three touchdowns on four catches for 121 yards.
Gisler had another 100-yard game, rushing for 106 and a touchdown on 13 attempts. Taylor Stambersky and Watts both had an interception on defense.
There are only two regular season games left for Platte County, starting with a matchup with a Class 6 opponent. The Pirates will host Park Hill South (1-6) on Oct. 13.
