In an early season clash between Platte County boys’ soccer teams, the Pirates (2-1) took down the Trojans (1-2) by a score of 2-1 in the Park Hill Kickoff Classic on August 31.
The matchup between Platte County and Park Hill was each team’s second game and on the consolation side of the bracket after both teams fell on the opening day of play on August 31. The Trojans lost 2-1 to Kansas City’s East (2-1) with Tanner Poirier scoring off a James Betz assist, while Aaron Cordova was the only Pirate to get on the scoreboard in the 3-1 loss to Blue Springs South (2-1).
In the meeting between Platte County and Park Hill, Lucas Hrisak connected with a pass to Hudson Browne who found the back of the net to give the Trojans a 1-0 advantage in the opening half. Platte County took control of the game with a pair of Cordova goals in the second half at 21:22 and 5:32 to win, 2-1.
With the victory over the Trojans, the Pirates advanced to the fifth-place game and took down Van Horn (1-2) in penalty kicks on September 1. It was scoreless at the end of regulation, with a highly competitive shootout in overtime.
A surplus of Pirates – Cordova, Gavin Nichols, Connor Currence, A.J. Schrick, Felix Victore and Mark Wiesehan – all scored in penalty kicks. With six saves in regulation, Pirate goalkeeper Jordan Hedrick had the game winning save to lift Platte County to a fifth-place finish.
On the same day, the Trojans had their first win of the season when they defeated Lincoln College Prep (0-3) by a score of 3-0. Thomas Sweet, Luka Andonovski and Daiggen Gaar all scored on the day with Andonovski and Poirier having the assists.
The Trojans and Pirates will play again at Platte County High School later on in the year on October 3. Park Hill will head to Oak Park (2-0) and Platte County will host Raytown (0-1) on September 8.
