Platte City was named the third-safest city in Missouri last month by SafeWise.
Platte City, with a listed population of nearly 5,000 and a median income of nearly $60,000 per household, had a violent crime rate per 1,000 residents of .20 and a property crime rate of 15.71 per 1,000 residents.
“The recognition for Platte City being a safe community is well deserved,” said Platte City mayor Frank Offutt of the announcement. “Our citizens and community leaders have worked tirelessly to achieve the quality of life we have today. With this distinction, the city adds to reasons why families and businesses should consider locating and transacting business in our hometown.”
According to the SafeWise press release, standings were identified using 2017 FBI crime report statistics and population data. Cities that fell below identified population thresholds — or that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI — were excluded from the report.
Statewide, there was fewer than one violent crime incident per 1,000 people. That’s nearly four fewer incidents than the national violent crime rate of 4.49. And each city that made our list did better than that. The news isn’t quite as good in property crime across the state. Missouri experienced 10 more incidents per 1,000 people than the national average.
Rankings are based on the number of reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape, and robbery) in each city. If there was a tie, SafeWise also factored in the number of property crimes (burglary, arson, larceny and motor vehicle theft). SafeWise gives precedence to violent crime because it typically results in physical harm or injury, whereas property crime usually has an economic impact.
SafeWise bills itself as a consumer advocate that tests, researches and reviews products, services such as home security systems and practices to make homes and communities safer.
