Platte County finishes in 16th place at state

The Platte County girls’ swimming team took 16th place out of 28 teams at the Class 1 State Championship at St. Peters Rec-Plex on Feb. 18.

This was an improvement from a 21st place finish at state a season ago. This winter, the Lady Pirates ended in the middle of the pack with 46 points, which was actually a tie with Rockwood Summit.

Brooklynn Hays stole the show for the Lady Pirates, becoming an all-state swimmer in a pair of events. Hays took sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:09.12 and seventh place in the 100-yard freestyle in 54.94 seconds.

Drew DeLay has been a big part of Platte County swimming in the previous four years, and she ended her prestigious career with a 10th place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke. She finished with a time of 1:10.94.

Both of those talented swimmers also had success in the relays. DeLay and Hays were on the 14th place 200-yard freestyle relay team that finished in 1:45.01. The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Lauren Beatty, Jayden Benninghoff, Madeleine Judy and Ireland Shank finished in 13th place with a time of 1:58.54.
