Platte County impresses at conference cross-country

Platte County senior Sisely Mitchell won an individual conference title at Missouri Southern on Oct. 14.

JOPLIN – Traveling nearly 200 miles for the Kansas City Suburban Conference White Division Cross-Country Meet, Platte County came away with two individual conference champions at Missouri Southern University on Oct. 14.

The Lady Pirates were able to clinch the conference championship as a team – thanks to having three of the top-4 finishers – ending with 24 points, eight less than runner-up Grain Valley. The Platte County boys ended in second place, one point behind Grain Valley’s 27.

The senior girls’ duo of Sisely Mitchell and Carmen Gentilia led the way to comfortably finish ahead of the rest of the runners. Mitchell was the conference champion in 18:28.5 and Gentilia was the runner-up in 19:47.7, which was more than a minute faster than the next runner.

Madison Palmer kept it rolling with a fourth-place finish with a time of 21:00.8. Joanna Reil, Alex Beeman and Eleanor McCoy finished back-to-back-to-back with one runner between them and 12th place Brooklynne Jenni.

Reil crossed the finish line in in 22:07.7 – 1.3 seconds ahead of Beeman – and McCoy ended in 22:19.4. Jenni ended with a time of 22:28.8.

Platte County also had the White Division Champion in the boys’ race as Andrew Johnson won with a time of 15:11.8, which was 58 seconds ahead of the runner-up. Blake Herron and Tanner Jenks finished in fourth and fifth places with times of 16:38.8 and 16:42.8, respectively.

Kade Meinke was the eighth runner to cross the finish line, doing so in 16:57.4, and Donavin Ness ended in 10th place with a time of 17:12.7. Benjamin Letcher took 13th place in 18:03.5 and Elijah Jackson took 23rd place in 19:16.8.
