Platte County soccer reaches NKC title game, loses to Class 4 No. 1

Platte County’s four-game winning streak came to an end in the North Kansas City Invitational championship game against the state’s best.

Lee’s Summit — undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the most recent Class 4 Missouri State High School Soccer Coaches Association state poll — blanked the Pirates 6-0 on Saturday, April 23. Platte County advanced to the title game with a pair of 1-0 victories before dropping to 9-5 overall with a four of the losses to Class 4 competition.

Platte County gave up a goal in the opening minute but only trailed 2-0 at halftime before the Broncos added four in the second half.

Five of Platte County’s six remaining games are against Suburban Conference Blue Division foes with the exception a Friday, April 29 game against Raymore-Peculiar.

Platte County 1, Shawnee Mission North 0

Brooke Zenner scored the lone goal on a pass from Destinee Smith in a pool play matchup Friday, April 22. Faith Burtchell recorded the shutout, sending Platte County into its championship matchup.

Platte County 1, Oak Park 0

The Pirates scored within the first 5 minutes but failed to add to their lead despite dominating play in their opener Wednesday, April 20.

Zenner set up Destinee Smith for the goal, but Zenner also missed a penalty kick opportunity. Burtchell and Kaylyn Hathaway split goalkeeping duties, received little pressure and combined on the shutout.

Platte County 4, Winnetonka 0

The Pirates improved to 4-1 in Suburban Conference Red Division play Tuesday, April 19 in Kansas City, Mo.

Smith scored a goal in both halves, while Zenner and Katana Audas added the others. Platte County returns to league play Wednesday, April 27 against Kearney, which won the first meeting with the Pirates 1-0 to take the lead in the Blue Division race.
