All attention was on Platte City Friday morning, Feb. 22, due to a standoff involving a man who fled across the state line due to an outstanding warrant.
The Platte County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a vehicle pursuit involving a 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt from Leavenworth, Kansas coming into Platte County at approximately 9:30 a.m.
The suspect, Sanquan Brooks, fled on foot from the vehicle and entered an apartment in the 100 block of O’Rourke Drive in Platte City.
Deputies from the Platte County Sheriff’s Office, including the Platte County SWAT Team and the Platte County Crisis Negotiations Team responded to the area and attempted to talk the suspect out of the apartment.
The PCSO joined the pursuit near Beverly, according to Sgt. Erik Holland.
Brooks, a 29-year old black male, was taken into custody by the Platte County SWAT Team after an approximately three and a half hour standoff. The suspect was taken into custody without any apparent injury. Brooks had an outstanding parole warrant out of Kansas for his arrest for an assault charge on Nov. 21, 2018.
Brooks was held at the Platte County Detention Center on a 24-hour hold before charges in Missouri were submitted to Platte County prosecutor attorney Eric Zahnd.
Later that day, Zahnd charged Brooks, a Lansing, Kan., resident, with felony resisting a lawful stop/detention by fleeing and creating substantial risk of serious injury.
Court documents showed the Platte City Police Department joined the chase once it reached town. Brooks was driving in excess of a 100 miles per hour during the pursuit. He wrecked his vehicle driving up to an embankment and took out a Spectrum cable box. Brooks then fled on foot and entered Apartment 3 at the Platte Landing Apartment Complex, according to court documents.
Officials stated Brooks had a ‘known’ acquaintance at that location. Two females and three children ran out of there and were taken to safety.
The two females acknowledged that Brooks was inside the residence and trying to hide inside the couch in the living room.
Court documents show that the women were asked by Brooks to help him because he didn’t want to go back to prison.
After numerous attempts to surrender, the SWAT team gained entry into the apartment and found Brooks had barricaded himself inside the couch in the living room.
He has a $20,000 cash only bond issued and as of Tuesday, Feb. 26, he was still in custody at the Platte County Detention Center in Platte City.
“Thanks to the efforts of our deputies and the cooperative relationship with other law enforcement agencies we were able to take Mr. Brooks into custody safely,” said sheriff Mark Owen.
