The Park Hill, Park Hill South and Platte County girls’ wrestling teams competed in the Wonder Woman in Columbia, Missouri, on Dec. 29 and 30 against 77 total teams.
Park Hill finished in sixth place overall with 111 points, Platte County was in 20th place with 77 points and Park Hill South ended in 59th place with 26 points. The Trojans’ successful outing at the Wonder Woman was led by Angelina Vargas (18-1) who finished in first place in the 115-weight class and scored 35 team points.
Vargas pinned four opponents and in the first-place match, she won by major decision over Cassville’s Annie Moore (MD 10-0). In the 141-weight class, Eve Herlyn (14-6) placed third and scored 26 team points when she pinned four opponents, including the third-place opponent Naida Abdijanovic (Mehlville), with the Trojans’ only loss coming in the quarterfinals to Northwest’s Lily Shaffrey on a 5-2 decision.
Taryn Johnson (17-6) placed fifth in the 125-weight class and scored 19 team points winning six of her eight matches. After winning her first three matches on a decision and two falls, Johnson lost on a decision against Isabel Basler (Ste. Genevive) before the Trojan eventually reached the fifth-place match and won by a 6-5 decision over Isabel Basler (Ste. Genevive).
Allison Gonier (18-4) finished in sixth place in the 120-weight class to score 17 team points for Park Hill. Gonier pinned her first three opponents and won on a tie breaker over Cassville’s Kailey Artherton (TB-1 4-3), but the Trojan came up short in her next three matches.
For Platte County, KayLyn Munn (17-3) was the top performer as she finished in second place and scored 30 team points in the 194-weight class. Munn pinned all five of her opponents, including North County’s Brooke Bennett at 1:19 in the first-place match.
The next highest Pirate finisher was in the 135-weight class when Audrey Call (22-3) placed 5th and scored 23 team points. Call bested her opponent in four of her first five matches before she was pinned by Bailey Joiner (Lebanon) at 3:23 in the consolation semifinals; Call received fifth place by medical forfeit over Sikeston’s Kate Grubbs.
Hannah Mand (11-11) scored 13 points for Platte County when the 120-pound wrestler won four of her six matches. Mand won all four of the matches by pins and lost to Mexico’s Abbigale Drew (fall 2:28).
For Park Hill South, Maddie Fosmoe (22-7) scored 20 of its 26 total points when she finished in seventh place in the 120-weight class. The Panther pinned her first opponent, lost by a 4-3 decision in her second match and then pinned her next three opponents.
In the next round, Fosmoe won in sudden victory over Seckman’s Emily Palos (SV-1 4-2) and then won by major decision over Blair Oaks’ Alayna Roling (MD 11-0). Fosmoe was pinned at 1:18 by Kailey Artherton (Cassville), but the Panther bounced back in the seventh-place match and pinned Abbigale Drew (Mexico) at 1:50.
Aniya Coleman (13-7) scored the remaining six points for Park Hill South in the 100-weight class. Coleman won three of her five matches with a pin over Belton’s Charlee Schilb (fall 5:30), a decision over Northwest’s Sam Cray (Dec 6-0) and won in sudden victory over Timberland’s Taylor Reiter (SV-1 3-1).
