A Kansas City man is in custody, charged with murdering an Ethiopian immigrant at the Riverside QuikTrip over the weekend.
Riverside Police and Fire departments responded to a 911 call shortly after 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9 at QuikTrip, 4600 NW Gateway Drive, where it was reported a party had been shot.
Upon arrival, a man later identified as 39-year-old Tariku Fite was found near his vehicle parked next to the gas pumps. Fite suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
At a vigil held later that day at Riverside Public Safety, members of Fite’s church told media the man helped fellow immigrants adapt to life in the United States.
Daniel Kelati, 50, was taken into custody later that day on suspicion of second degree murder and armed criminal action. He was denied bond and charged on Sunday, Oct. 10. He will appear before judge Quint Shafer on Monday, Nov. 2. If convicted, he faces up to life in prison.
Court documents state Kelati approached an officer at the scene and allegedly took responsibility for Fite’s killing.
Kelati’s vehicle was later searched pursuant to a search warrant, and police found a handgun on the driver’s seat. Investigators also found a single spent bullet casing near where Fite was shot. Ammunition in the gun allegedly was the same type as the spent casing.
A witness said Kelati and Fite knew one another and had worked for the same trucking company.
Kelati is being held in the Platte County jail without bond. If convicted, he faces up to life in prison.
