The Platte County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the Kansas City Police Department, is investigating a threat against Lakeview Middle School reported over the weekend.
Late on Sunday, Oct. 3, the sheriff’s office became aware of threats of a school shooting at the Park Hill School District school, located off Northwest 64th Street near Parkville.
“The safety of our schools is one of the top priorities for the sheriff’s office,” said sheriff Mark Owen in a statement released Sunday night. “We are blessed to have a good working relationship with the Park Hill School District. Even though we don’t believe there is any further threat to the school, the sheriff’s office and the Park Hill School District are working together to ensure the safety of the schools, students and staff. The strong partnerships in Platte County between law enforcement agencies and school districts are the cornerstone of keeping our schools safe.”
According to the statement, investigators are speaking with the involved students and working with the district and the Platte County Juvenile Office.
Lakeview Principal Kirsten Clemons sent two notices home to parents in response to the event.
“We appreciate the quick work of the police to protect us, and we especially appreciate the students and families who reported this potential threat,” Clemons said in the notes to parents, noting the threats were made via social media.
School went on as normal Monday, Oct. 4 with additional law enforcement presence, as police believed there was no additional threat.
