South runner makes history

Park Hill South junior cross country runner Madilynn Conklin has qualified for the state championships three times, and all three times, she has returned home with a medal.

Conklin finished 10th with a time of 18:26.8 at the Missouri Class 5 Cross Country Championships on Friday, Nov. 8, at Gans Creek in Columbia. According to the Park Hill School District, Conklin is the first girls’ runner to medal three times at a state competition.

The district also had two runners medal in the boys’ championship race. Park Hill South junior Thomas Garrett medaled for the second time in his career with a 12th place finish in the boys’ race with a time of 15:20.0. Park Hill senior Jakob Johnston medaled for the Trojans with a 25th place finish and a time of 15:47.9.

Other runners finishing the boys’ race included a pair of South juniors, Grant Windmeyer and Cole James. Windmeyer finished 68th with a time of 16:28.9, and James finished 89th with a time of 16:40.9. Park Hill senior John Mattivi finished 102nd with a time of 16:51.6.
