Regan Williams continues to impress during her sophomore campaign as the 6’0 Panther was the MVP in the North Kansas City Tournament when she helped lead the Park Hill South girls’ basketball team (15-6) to a first place finish.
In the two tournament games – after Schlagle forfeited in the opening round – Williams averaged 17.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2.5 blocks, while shooting 63 percent from the field. In the second round, the Panthers had to take on Liberty (8-10) for the second time in one week.
After Park Hill South defeated Liberty 51-36 in regular season play on Jan. 26, the Blue Jays were on the verge of an upset in the rematch, but the Panthers pulled out the 45-41 victory on Feb. 3. Tatum Kells made all four of her free throw attempts to give the 6’2 center 10 points and Panther senior Jayme Dixon converted on both of her field goal attempts to finish with eight points.
In the championship game, Park Hill South was matched up with St. Pius X (13-4) on Feb. 4. The Warriors put up a fight, but the Panthers came out on top, 46-39.
Williams finished the contest with 17 points, eight rebounds, four blocks and two steals to secure the championship win and MVP trophy. Avery Simmons ended with 13 points, seven rebounds and two steals and was selected to the all-tournament team.
Kells ended the tournament with a double-double as she scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
With the Class 6 District 8 Tournament approaching, the Panthers will have just four more regular season contests. Park Hill South is currently riding a five-game winning streak and will be back at it when its hosts Staley (13-5) on Feb. 10.
