Suburban boys roundup: Park Hill South wins Republic Tournament

The Park Hill South opened the season by winning the Republic Tournament this past weekend.

The Panthers went 3-0 with wins over Rolla, Ozark and Republic in the southwest Missouri tournament. The win streak also marked the fourth year in a row of starting with at least three wins.

Park Hill opened with a 90-39 win against Rolla, scoring 57 points in the first half against the Bulldogs on Thursday, Dec. 5. Six different players scored in the first quarter, led by eight from Messias Dockery, while Connor Robertson and Josh Prososki each hit three 3-pointers in the second quarter.

Prososki finished with a game-high 17 points, while Robertson added 12. Each hit four 3-pointers in the victory.

It marked the first time the Panthers hit 90 points in a game since a 91-33 win against Central Academy on Jan. 17, 2012.

Park Hill South 59, Ozark 52

The Panthers trailed at halftime but rallied in the third quarter to take the lead back for good against the Tigers on Friday, Dec. 6.

Prososki scored seven of his game-high 22 points in the third quarter for Park Hill, which trailed 32-29 at the break. The scoring swing gave Park Hill South a five-point lead going into the final eight minutes.

In the fourth, Park Hill South hit seven of eight free throws to pull away.

Prososki was 9-for-9 from the line and was the only Panther in double figures.

Park Hill South 59, Republic 50

Tied at 40 going into the fourth, the Panthers scored 10 points from the free-throw line in the fourth to pull away for a victory on Saturday, Dec. 7 in the championship game of the tournament.

Garrett Lee hit seven of his eight attempts, finishing with a team-high 17 points for the Panthers. Josh Prososki had 14 points and Connor Robertson added 12, all on 3-pointers for Park Hill South.

Drew McMillin scored 22 for Republic and accounted for five of the Tigers’ 10 points in the fourth.

Savannah Tournament

Platte County picked up a pair of wins in the 91st annual Savannah Invitational held last week.

Platte County opened with a 60-36 victory against the host Savages on Tuesday, Dec. 3.

Platte County led 28-19 at the break and then posted a 21-0 scoring advantage in the third quarter to wrap up the win over the Savages in the season opener.

Jaden Burnett and Joey Schultz each had 14 points. Schultz and Jace Trimble both had seven rebounds for Platte County.

Chillicothe 61, Platte County 42

The Hornets beat their former conference foe on Thursday, Dec. 5 to reach the title game of the tournament.

Chillicothe, Platte County and Savannah all were 1-1 in pool play but Chillicothe got the nod to move on to the championship game.

Chillicothe closed the first half on a 10-2 run and led 26-15 at the break. The Hornets then outscored the Pirates by eight in the third quarter to lead 41-23 going into the fourth.

Trimble tallied 13, including hitting two 3s, to lead the Platte County offense. Jarrett Mueller added 10, while Dylan Minshall had eight points and eight rebounds.

Westley Brandsgaard had 19 for Chillicothe.

Platte County 64, Maryville 52

The Pirates bounced back from the loss with a balanced scoring attack to pick up a win on Saturday, Dec. 7 in the third-place game.

The Pirates took a 27-19 lead at the break against the Spoofhounds. Platte County added 22 points in the fourth to pull away for good.

Schultz had 16 points, followed by 10 each from Trimble and Minshall. Dylan Montes and Burnett scored nine points each.

Other games

North Kansas City 86, Park Hill 84

The Hornets rallied in the fourth quarter to clip the Trojans on Friday, Dec. 6 at the end of a wrestling-basketball doubleheader at Park Hill High School.

The Trojans and Hornets were tied at 41 at halftime, but Drew Townsend scored nine of his 10 points in the third quarter to give Park Hill a 10-point lead going into the fourth.

The Hornets rallied in the final frame behind an 11-for-14 effort from the free-throw line. Athuai Ding scored nine of his team-high 18 points for North Kansas City. All six players who scored for North Kansas City had at least 10 points.

Christian Bradford scored a game-high 30 for Park Hill, while Nyk Bryant added 24 points. Bradford was 11-for-11 from the free-throw line.
