Suburban Conference volleyball roundup: Platte County wins conference championship

Platte County picked up a road win against the Winnetonka Griffins on Thursday, Oct. 24 in Kansas City.

The win gave the Pirates the Suburban Conference Blue Division title. 

Platte County won the first set 25-17 before taking the second set 25-14.

Riley Stehlik led the Pirates in kills with eight, while Bryn McGehe and Kate Brown each earned six. Ashley Bell led the team in assists with 14, and Aly Anderson served three of the Pirates’ seven aces.

Presli Firkins had a team-high seven digs with Bell and Anderson each recording five. In addition, Nicola Kingery recorded both of Platte County’s blocks in the win.

Park Hill 2, Kearney 0

The Park Hill Trojans took down the visiting Kearney Bulldogs on senior night on Tuesday, Oct. 22.

The Trojans won the first set by just three points, winning 25-22. But in the second set, they put their foot on the gas and defeated the Bulldogs 25-15.

As usual, Kristen Birmingham led the Trojans in kills, earning nine on the night. Aliyah Lyons had a team-high 15 assists, while serving three of the team’s six aces.

Shaye Koski led the team in digs with six, while Megan Hoover had five. Hannah Graves and Aisha Aiono each got two blocks in the win.

Platte County 2, Grandview 0

The Pirates annihilated the Bulldogs of Grandview in a home game on Tuesday, Oct. 22.

Platte County won the first set 25-6. In the second set, the Bulldogs fought back but were still limited to just 11 points, losing by 14.

Bryn McGehe, who recently announced her verbal commitment to continue her volleyball career at KU, had eight of the Pirates’ 21 kills. She also served four aces, while Aly Anderson led the team with five.

Ashley Bell put up a team-high 10 assists. Presli Firkins and Bell also combined for 13 digs on the night, recording seven and six, respectively.

Park Hill South 2, Lee’s Summit 1

Park Hill South edged out the visiting Lee’s Summit Tigers in a contest held on Tuesday, Oct. 22.

In the first set, the Tigers picked up a 25-20 victory over the Panthers. In the second set, the Panthers stormed back and took the set 25-21. And in the ever-important third set, Park Hill South held on for a 25-20 victory.

Rachel Francis (11) and Alex Dvorak (9) combined for 20 kills in the win. Arley Anderson had 29 assists to go along with three aces; both were team highs.

On defense, Keegan Good led the way with 28 digs, while Anderson recorded 14, as well. The Panthers recorded nine blocks on the night with five of them being attributed to Dvorak.

Park Hill 2, Raymore-Peculiar 0

The Trojans held on to pick up a home win against the Raymore-Peculiar Panthers on the last night of the regular season on Thursday, Oct. 24.

Park Hill won the first set by a score of 25-15. Raymore-Peculiar fought hard in the second set, but the Trojans pulled out the victory 25-22.

Aisha Aiono had a career-high nine kills in the win, and Shaye Koski also put up seven. Aliyah Lyons had a strong performance, recording three of the Trojans’ seven aces, along with a team-high 12 assists.

Koski (10) and Kristen Birmingham (8) combined for 18 digs in the win. In addition, Aisha and Aile Aiono had two blocks each.

Park Hill South 2, St. Joseph Central 0

The Panthers earned a road win over the Central Indians in the last game of the regular season on Thursday, Oct. 24.

Park Hill South took the first set 25-17. The second set was tougher for the Panthers, but they still managed to hold off the Indians 25-20.

Alex Dvorak and Rachel Francis each had 10 kills in the win. Arley Anderson, who recorded a career-high 46 assists the last time that these two teams met, put up all 33 assists for Park Hill South.

Francis led the team with three blocks, while Keegan Good recorded 18 digs.
