Platte County broke a long-standing school record during a meet held at the Platte County Community Center North on Tuesday, Oct. 22.
The 200-yard freestyle relay won in 1 minute, 33.24 seconds to easily beat Ray-Pec. The Platte County team of Rhett Spell, Baxter Stone, Joe Ragone and Brice Bills broke the previous mark of 1:34.07, which was set in 2006.
That is one of two relay teams that have secured automatic spots in the state swimming championships next month. The full list of state qualifiers will be released on Sunday, Nov. 3.
Platte County won the five-team meet with 730 ½ points, easily beating Ray-Pec, which was second with 477 points.
Spell added another win by taking first in the 50 freestyle, a race where Bills took third place. Spell was third in the 100 freestyle.
Ragone tied for first in the 100 butterfly with Smithville’s Brady Bell at 59.74185 seconds.
Luke Harms took first in the 500 freestyle and teammate Zach Sill was third.
Stone, Dye, Dylan Bietz and Spell won the 400 freestyle relay, posting a 21-second margin of victory.
Stone was the runner-up and Ryan Dye was third in the 200 freestyle.
The 200 medley relay team of Ragone, Christian Yocklin, Collin Burton and Bills took third. The 200 freestyle team of Dye, Matteo Herrera, Blake Lewis and Burton took third.
Other thirds went to: Austin Hough in the 200 individual medley; Ben Larson in the 1-meter diving and Bietz in the 100 backstroke and Ragone in the 100 breaststroke.
