Suburban golf roundup: Platte County wins 4th straight league title

Two Platte County golfers picked a good time to have their best showings of the season.

Seven teams gathered at Shiloh Springs Golf Course on Monday, Sept. 30 for the Suburban Conference Blue Division championship.

Six teams were gunning for the host Pirates, which had won three straight league crowns.

Thanks to three golfers shooting 100 or less, Platte County won a fourth title in a row. The Pirates shot 399 as a team, four shots better than Kearney on a hot, yet windy day in Platte City.

Platte County’s Eden Shipp putts on hole No. 12 during the Suburban Conference Blue Division championship held on Monday, Sept. 30 at Shiloh Springs Golf Course in Platte City.

Platte County’s Eden Shipp fired a 93 and came one shot away from winning the league crown. That honor went to Smithville’s Mahlee Wohlford.

Then next two finishers for the Pirates were Victoria Sanders and Mannon Bigus, who shot 95 and 100, respectively. Sanders, who took fourth and Bigus, who was sixth, both shot career lows on the day.

Bailey Silcott fired an 111 and took 15th place, earning second-team all-conference honors.

Both Kearney and Smithville also had four all-conference golfers, taking up 12 of the 15 spots awarded.

“We knew going into the tournament it was going to be a battle and that we were going to have to keep it together for 18 holes,” Platte County coach Trevor Short said. “The conditions were a little tough with the rains from the weekend and the windy conditions (on Monday). The team battled through it and managed to bring home our fourth straight consecutive conference championship. I am so proud of how the team has been working hard and pushing each other to do their best even when things aren’t going our way.”

Suburban Gold

Park Hill’s Ishika Akula earned all-conference honors during the Suburban Conference Gold Division championships held on Monday, Sept. 30 in Independence.

Akula shot 100, the fourth lowest score of the day at WinterStone Golf Course.

Teammate Sydney Hamilton shot 107 and was four shots off the final all-conference spot. The Trojans were sixth overall in the team standings.

Lee’s Summit West won the league title by 27 shots and Blue Springs’ Lauren Muller shot 89 to win by six shots.
