TENNIS ROUNDUP: Park Hill repeats at champ at home doubles tournament

Park Hill won the team title and took first place in three of four individual flights Wednesday, April 12 at Barry Park in Kansas City, Mo. in the third annual Park Hill Doubles Tournament.

After going 3-0 in pool play, Park Hill won three of four matches against Blue Springs South in the final. Cooper Hayes and Chandler To (No. 2), Matt Zhang and Ryan Decker (No. 3), and Lucas Cuni-Mertz and Gabe Rau (No. 4) all went unbeaten on the day. Jake McFee and Grant Martin, the Trojans’ No. 1 doubles entry, went 3-1 with the lone loss coming in the final.

Park Hill has now won the tournament title each of the past three years, taking tiebreakers each of the first two times out.

Truman Tournament

Platte County grabbed three top four finishes in four individual flights Saturday, April 15 at Santa Fe Trail Park in Independence, Mo.

Noah Singer led the way, going 2-1 in A singles. His day included a 10-3 victory over Ethan Gates of Staley in the third-place match. Payton Anderson was sixth in B singles.

Platte County’s Brayden Percival and Jack Lawver were also third place in B doubles. The Pirates also won their final match to earn third place. 

Spencer Kunz and Spencer Klopfer went 1-2 in A doubles to finish fourth. Platte County’s top team opened with a win but dropped their semifinal and third-place matches.

William Chrisman Tournament

The Pirates were fourth as a team in a quick return to Santa Fe Trail Park in Independence, Mo.

On Monday, April 17, Platte County’s three doubles teams all finished in the top five. Singer and Percival led the way at third place in the B Flight, while Kunz and Klopfer played well but ended up fourth in A Flight.

The C Flight team included Anderson and Porter Curtis, who filled in for Lawver (illness). Platte County’s third team took fifth.

Excelsior Springs Tournament

Platte County tied for first in the event for a second straight year but lost the tiebreaker this time around. Klopfer took the No. 2 singles bracket for the Pirates’ lone flight championship.

Kearney took the first-place trophy after beating Platte County in pool play.

Klopfer went 4-0, closing with an 8-1 win, while senior Kunz went 3-1 in No. 1 singles to finish as runner-up for Platte County. All three of the Pirates’ doubles teams (No. 1 Singer/ Percival, No. 2 Lawver/ Anderson, No. 3 Burton Stinnett/Braden Rowe) went 3-1 and finished third.
