Trojans have successful weekend at KC Stampede

Park Hill senior Kal Miller finished the Kansas City Stampede as a champion and won the Outstanding Wrestler Award on Dec. 18.

The Trojan boys’ wrestling team ended in 16th place out of 54 teams with 82 points in the tournament. The Lady Trojans also impressed at the competition, ending in sixth place overall with 97 points, led by Angelina Vargas as a runner-up in the 115-weight class.

The tournament took two days, starting on Dec. 17, and the opening day wrapped up with four Trojans in the semifinals. Vargas and Eve Herlyn made it on the girls’ side, while Cael Keck and Miller qualified for the boys.

Miller was in the 145-weight class when the Trojan took down Edmond North’s Layton Schneider in the championship match, 8-0. Keck was the runner-up in the 132-weight class when he fell in the championship match, 4-2.

Kody Ketchum ended in eighth place in the 138-weight class when the Trojan went 4-3 on the weekend. Ketchum fell in his last two matches against Arkansas City’s Jevin Winfield and Whitfield’s Gavin O’Fallon.

For the Lady Trojans, Vargas fell to Edmond North’s Bella Williams 11-2 in her last match of the tournament. Ali Gonier ended in third place in the 120-weight class and Herlyn finished in fourth place in the 141-weight class.
