The Park Hill Trojans’ softball team got five runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back, getting the 6-1 win on the road over rival Park Hill South on Wednesday, Sept. 24.
Brooklyn Bertoncino went all seven innings for Park Hill, giving up one run on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Bertoncino gave up the lone South run in the bottom half of the first inning and then went six scoreless the rest of the way.
Autumn Bridges and Ellie Harris both drove in two runs for Park Hill. The Trojans’ offense collected eight hits, with Brynlee Johnson and Kylee Page each collecting two hits. Johnson had the only extra-base hit for Park Hill with a double. Leadoff hitter Alli Gonier and Page each drew two walks. South committed two errors in the game.
Ella Purl started on the mound for the Panthers and only got one out in the top of the first inning, giving up five runs on two hits and three walks. Maddie Smith came in relief and went 6 2/3 innings, giving up one run on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
Macie Booth, Emalee Taylor, Bayli Middleton, Erin Stewart, and Purl each collected a hit for South. Stewart scored the only run for the Panthers.
The Trojans followed up the victory with a win at home over Oak Park 2-0 on Thursday, Sept. 26. It was Park Hill’s 11th win in a row and the sixth time during that stretch that Trojans’ pitching shut out the opponent. The Trojans got two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and seven shutout innings from Mandia Bock. The sophomore gave up only three hits and walked only one batter while striking out nine.
Bertoncino, Bridges, Cooper Powell, and Jaeda Stroud collected a hit. Bridges and Stroud each scored a run, and Stroud drove in a run.
South also played last Thursday and lost at home to Liberty 9-1. Stewart, Middleton, Layla Ghude, and Maci Blake each had hits in the game for South. Blake also scored a run.
Both teams will meet again on Wednesday, Oct. 2, at the Trojans’ home diamond.
