A Platte City man has been charged with second degree assault after allegedly beating his victim into a coma in Ferrelview.
Thomas Carson was charged Saturday, March 8 and bonded out of the Platte County Detention Center on Monday, March 10 after paying the $15,000 cash-only bond. Carson is due back in court Tuesday, March 18.
According to court documents, on Saturday, deputies responded to the area of Seventh and Heady streets in Ferrelview, where there was a disturbance. A white male victim was laying in the street. Witnesses reported the victim lost consciousness for a short time before arrival of law enforcement.

That victim and witnesses identified Carson as the person who pushed him, causing him to fall and hit his head on the ground. Witnesses stated that the victim was coming to the defense of an unrelated third party who was in a verbal argument. The fall caused a laceration, significant swelling, and bleeding to the back of the victim’s head.
Carson admitted to pushing the victim, but gave inconsistencies as to the nature of the disturbance. The second victim was punched in the mouth by Carson causing bleeding to his mouth. Both victims as well as witnesses observed Carson push the first victim to the ground, then punched victim two in the mouth, causing bleeding.
The first victim initially refused medical treatment on scene against medical advice. Later, law enforcement responded to that victim’s home, where he was found unconscious in the bathroom. He was bleeding from the back of the head and appeared to have vomited blood. He was transported to an area hospital. Later, the victim’s wife told police that medical staff at the hospital told her he’d suffered three brain bleeds, including one on the brain stem, and the victim is being mechanically ventilated and remains in a coma.
Police noted that Carson has previous criminal convictions, including a sexual assault from 1984.
