West Platte sends 26 athletes to state

Nearly 30 West Platte athletes came away from the Class 2 Sectional 4 Meet with a top-4 finish at Plattsburg High School on May 13.

West Platte senior Charlie Kinslow qualified for state in three events after an impressive day in the Class 2 Sectional 4 Meet at Plattsburg High School on May 13.

With state next up, 26 Blue Jays will be competing at the highest level after an impressive outing at sectionals. West Platte will send a large chunk in the relays as the boys and girls had three qualify for state, each.

Augie Hill broke the program record in the 100-meter dash, earning a silver medal with a time of 10.93 seconds. Hill just missed out on qualifying in the 200-meter dash, taking fifth place in 23.13 seconds.

Hill was on the first place 4x100-meter relay team – along with Colton Depetre, Dominic Williams and Will Shafer – in 44.09 seconds. Jonah McGivern subbed in for Depetre in the 4x200-meter relay team that earned a bronze medal in 1:32.72.

Charlie Kinslow collected two more gold medals as an individual in the second-to-last meet of his high school career. He won the 800 and 1,600-meter runs with times of 2:00.17 and 4:37.75, respectively.

Kinslow was joined by McGivern, Tristan Newkirk and Alex Kinslow in the 4x800-meter relay. Those four crossed the finish line in 8:38.12 to take fourth place.

McGivern will be headed to state in three events, including the 400-meter dash when he ended in fourth place in the race at sectionals with a time of 51.47 seconds. Miles McHenry set the program record in the javelin with a 155-08-foot throw but ended in fifth place and his season ended at sectionals.

For the girls, Blair McHenry, Avery Holmes and Maddie McMillan were on the 4x800 and 4x400 – with Julia Pattison and Sam Baker filling up the rosters – both of which took third place. Sophie Greir, Ahlanna Rutherford, Hailey Peters and Baker were on the fourth place 4x100-meter relay team.

The Lady Blue Jays only had two individuals who survived the day: Rutherford and Baker. Rutherford tied for third place in the high jump and Baker earned third place in the 400-meter dash.

West Platte will compete in the Class 2 State Meet on May 19 and 20. The meet will be at Jefferson City High School.
