WESTON – The regular season officially began for the West Platte volleyball team (4-2) who hosted Orrick (1-2) in its first best three-of-five match of the fall and came out with a sweep at home on Aug. 31.
West Platte started the year off with a third-place finish in the KCI Tournament, which was the first to two wins. With the regular season underway, the non-tournaments are the first to three wins.
West Platte won 3-0 against Orrick with all three matches having a larger margin of victory than the last. The first set was the only competitive one with the Lady Blue Jays surviving with a 25-15 triumph.
Orrick scored more in the first set than the next two sets combined. West Platte won set two 25-7 and walked away with the sweep after outscoring its opponent 25-6 in the third set.
Kaitlyn Reinke was the top server on the night, coming away with nine aces. Maddison McMillan set her teammates up well, finishing with 23 assists.
Klaira Groom ended with 10 kills and Avery Holmes had 13 digs to lead the West Platte offense. Gracie Carlson and Anastyn Eades both had one block each.
West Platte has now defeated Orrick in six straight matchups – not losing a single set in that timeframe – and has posted an impressive 14-2 record against said opponent since 2009. The Lady Blue Jays will head to Kansas City Lutheran (1-1) on Sept. 7.
