PECULIAR – The Park Hill football team (1-1) came back down to earth after a dominant week 1 win, getting shut out in three of four quarters and losing 28-14 against Raymore-Peculiar (1-1) on Sept. 1.
Park Hill struggled offensively in the first quarter, only gaining two first downs and were unable to capitalize on a fumble recovery on a punt on the first play of the second quarter. The Panthers scored on a 48-yard rush with 3:58 left in the first quarter to go up 7-0.
The Trojan offense finally got going midway through the second quarter, putting together a 10-play, 84-yard scoring drive. Park Hill converted on a 3rd and 11 with a 31-yard pass from Gavin Schaag to Landon Julson, putting the ball on Raymore-Peculiar’s side of the field.
The drive ended with Bryce Lisaka rushing in for a 2-yard score with 5:20 left, tying the game. On the ensuing Park Hill possession, Schaag had his first turnover of the season, a Panther pick six, which put them back ahead 14-7.
Park Hill went on to have one last promising drive ahead of the break, scoring on the final play of the first half. On 4th and goal from the 9-yard line, Schaag found Gage Dorrell who tied the game at 14.
The Trojans’ offense continued to have some early season struggles, going three-and-out in every third quarter drive they had. The Panthers added a touchdown on a red zone score, going back up 21-14.
The first Park Hill first down in the second half came with under 10 minutes in the fourth quarter when Dylan Schaefer brought in an 8-yard pass on 3rd and five. The Trojans were unable to use that as momentum, turning the ball over three plays later.
Raymore-Peculiar milked the clock on a 9-play, 46-yard scoring drive that put Park Hill behind 28-14 with right under four minutes left. The Trojans had one last possession, but once again were unable to get the ball down the field and turned it over on downs and lost to the Panthers for the third straight season.
Raymore-Peculiar outgained Park Hill 327 to 248 in yardage in the 28-14 win. Schaag passed for 136 yards and ran for 79 yards.
On defense, Sai’Quan Copeland and Tommy Clark both had an interception, while Jonah Were finished with one sack. Park Hill will look to bounce back at home against Blue Springs South (0-2) on Sept. 8.
