The Platte County School District transportation department did its best to make sure children could get to school when needed.
On Thursday, Jan. 23, transportation director JT Thomas used his pickup truck to pick up two children that live near O’Rourke Drive and Atchison Court. Two buses had issues navigating the area due to snow and ice on the road. One couldn’t make it up a hill and another down a hill, so Thomas called the city and the school used some of their own salt to help get traction.
Thomas picked up the two boys and got them to Compass Elementary.
When asked about it Thomas, gave a simple response. “I was just doing my job.”
The district has been battling numerous road conditions this past week. With a good chunk of the school district in the Kansas City portion of Platte City, the district has seen issues with the buses. The city has such as large portion of roads to clear and there were issues at 80th Terrace and Green Hills Road and Thomas took the students to Barry School.
This district uses four buses to get students from the southern portion of the county to the high school, nine to Barry School and 10 for Pathfinder Elementary.
