A Kansas City man accused of resisting arrest and possession of a controlled substance has pleaded not guilty and will be due back in court next month.
Anthony R. Williams, 55, remains in custody at the Platte County Detention Center, facing several charges and held on a $50,000 cash-only bond. Williams will appear before judge Thomas Fincham for an arraignment on Thursday, Feb. 13.
According to court documents, the Platte County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a concerned citizen at around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11. The citizen spotted a vehicle sitting off the side of the roadway with the dome light on near the intersection of Highway HH and Bethel Road just outside Platte City.
Due to concern about recent stolen vehicles, theft from vehicles and burglaries in the area, deputies responded. When the patrol sergeant pulled in behind the vehicle, the driver accelerated the vehicle out of the ditch and a pursuit was initiated.
The driver led police on a high-speed chase on Highway Z through Dearborn, then onto northbound Interstate 29. During the pursuit stop sticks were deployed and the driver swerved at the patrol car. The driver also threw paper items out of the car’s window, which when recovered were determined to be mail.
The vehicle was stopped on I-29 after all four tires were down to the rims.
The driver was taken into custody but refused to identify himself. During a pat down the male suspect was found to have two small baggies with a crystal-like substance which tested positive as methamphetamine. Three prescription bottles were found in the car containing non-controlled medications but each one had different people’s names and address listed on the bottles.
The vehicle was reported stolen out of Kansas City on Dec. 10.
Scattered in the vehicle were more than 25 pieces of postal mail with different people’s names along with several opened packages with various names and addresses.
Williams also has two outstanding warrants, one of which is for failure to appear in court on forgery charges in Johnson County, Kan.
