Lady Panthers’ veterans laying foundation for future

Regan Lea putts the ball last season.

Park Hill South senior golfers Regan Lea and Molly Toohig will be joined with a trio of juniors on a veteran squad.

Junior Makenna Casey is entering the third year of being the number one golfer after finishing in 26th place at state as a freshman and being an all-state golfer in her sophomore campaign. Casey ended in the top-10 with 160 strokes in the 2022 Class 4 State Tournament.

“Makenna Casey finished 9th overall last year as a sophomore,” Park Hill South head golf coach Tracy Mangels said. “She is a great player and works really hard on improving while playing competitive in the offseason.”

Casey will be joined with classmates Brynlee Justice and Addi Grimm, who filled out the roster last fall. The Lady Panthers have high expectations with the experience coming back.

“I like the team’s chances this year; we return all five girls that played at districts last year and I know they’ve been working hard over the summer and should only improve on last year. Until someone outplays the returners, they will be in the lineup. It’s nice to have that luxury and some other girls coming after that playing time,” Mangels said.

Senior Hannah Matson and Brooke Nichols are the final two golfers fighting for the last spot. Mangels told the Platte County Citizen that he expects a strong outing when the regular season comes to an end.

“As always with golf you have to play your best golf in the postseason to advance. We have the ability to play deep in the postseason. We just have to perform well at districts and hopefully advance to the State Tournament,” Mangels said.
