PLATTE CITY – Despite being at or above .500 all year long, it took until now for the Platte County boys’ basketball team (13-8) to win four games in a row.
Since winning the final game of the Grain Valley Invitational, Platte County has been on a roll. Entering the final stretch of three more contests, the Pirates are playing their best basketball and peaking at the end of the season.
Each of the last three wins by Platte County gave it back-to-back victories against each opponent it beat. That streak started with a 52-43 triumph over St. Joseph’s Central (7-16) on Feb. 2.
Judah Vignery was perfect from the free-throw line, making all 11 of his attempts and scoring 25 points. Jaden Peterson had 13 points and seven rebounds and Anthony Morrison scored 11.
The Pirates beat Grain Valley (11-10) by a score of 61-54 on Feb. 6, moving to 3-1 in conference play. Vignery had his third double-double of his senior season, tallying 22 points and 10 rebounds.
Peterson and Brady Wetzel had identical shooting nights, making 3-of-7 field goals and shooting 50 percent from deep. Peterson made two threes and had 11 points and all three of Wetzel’s makes were from behind the arc, giving him 10 points – along with a made free throw.
Through three quarters, Platte County was in a battle against William Chrisman on Feb. 9. The Pirates led 34-32 ahead of the final frame and made big plays late, winning 57-46.
That victory put them a half a game up on the rest of the Kansas City Suburban Conference White Division with two conference matchups left. Platte County headed to Belton (8-15) on Feb. 13 and will host Raytown (15-6) on Feb. 16.
