Cameron Gillespie picked up a championship at the Greater Kansas City Suburban Conference Invitational held on Saturday, Jan. 18 in Belton.
The Park Hill South senior won the title at the 220-pound class, the best finish for a Park Hill South team that was seventh in the field. Kearney won the team title by 10 points ahead of Lee’s Summit North.
Gillespie pinned Raytown South’s Caleb Harness and then pinned Blue Springs South’s Cooper Boyles in 5:24 to reach the finals. There, the returning state qualifier got a 2-0 win over Zane Ragland of Lee’s Summit North in the finals. Gillespie improved his mark to 28-1 on the season, while Ragland fell to 20-3.
Six other Panthers landed in the place matches.
Max Rosario (170) ended his day with a 20-5 technical fall win over Robert Woltkamp of Belton. Connor Detty (120) ended up fourth after falling by a tech fall loss to Jacob Windsor of Staley, 20-3, in the third-place match. Gage Baska (145) also was fourth. He lost his final match by a 7-6 decision to Jacob Quest of Ray-Pec.
Dylan Taylor (106) took fifth after getting an injury default win against Riley Ragan of William Chrisman. Mohammed Ali (126) finished sixth after dropping his last match to Ryan McNeel of Lee’s Summit North by a 17-9 major decision. Clay Cronkleton (285) took sixth, going 3-2, but lost to Jesus Reuscher of Kearney, 13-8, in the fifth-place match.
Park Hill 69, Blue Springs South 12
The Trojans picked up a Suburban Gold Division win on the road on Wednesday, Jan. 15 in Blue Springs.
Park Hill won nine of the first 10 matches against the Jaguars to build an insurmountable advantage.
Larry Charles (170) got a forfeit win before the Jaguars got a win at 182 to tie the match. After that, Park Hill took off. Chris Bizzle (195/decision), Ashton Sharp (220/forfeit), Logan Lasater (285/pin), Cael Keck (106/pin); Josef Moreno (113/pin); Ryker Smith (120/forfeit); Kody Ketchum (126/forfeit) and Trey Crawford (132/pin) all followed with wins.
After the Jaguars got their second and final win at 138, Kal Miller (145/pin), Grayston DiBlasi (152/forfeit) and Jack Vande Ven (160/forfeit) wrapped up the match.
Kearney 54, Platte County 19
The Pirates lost a home dual agains the Bulldogs on Tuesday, Jan. 14.
Kearney won the first match, but Drake Lacina’s technical fall over Jacob Jackson, 20-5, at the 170-pound class pulled the Pirates within 6-5.
Five straight wins by Kearney followed before Grant Stathopoulos (113) got a 6-0 decision over Trenden Rogers to stop the losing streak for the Pirates. Kearney won at 120, but Trey Phan (126) and Eli Rocha (132) followed with wins. Phan pinned Gary Jacobs and Rocha got a tech fall against Leyton Manley, 16-1.
The Bulldogs then won the final three matches to lock up the Suburban Conference Blue Division match.
Liberty North 52, Park Hill South 24
The Eagles picked up a Suburban Conference Red Division victory on Tuesday, Jan. 14.
Liberty North won six of the first seven matches to take control of the contest, the lone win for the Panthers in that stretch came from Connor Detty at 120, pinning Kaden Sullivan.
Park Hill South got three more wins in the match, coming from Gage Baska (145), Max Rosario (170) and Cameron Gillespie (182). All three won by pins, with Rosario getting a fall over Trenton Bryd in only 50 seconds.
Liberty North got 18 points from forfeits by the Panthers.
