Another winter storm arrived in the metro area on Friday, Jan. 17 and caused issues for various forms of transportation.
All four of the local school districts called off school in advance of the storm that came with a wave of freezing rain and then snow behind it.
At Kansas City International Airport, a Delta Air Lines flight slid off the runway, which forced the airport to shut down for nearly five hours. More than 90 flights were delayed or canceled before the airport reopened for good at noon.
There were 129 passengers and crew on the Delta flight headed to Detroit
The issues at the airport were the same on the roads nearby.
RideKC officials said all buses operated by the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority were suspended from early Friday morning until 2 p.m. due to road conditions after two buses slid off NW Prairie View Road in Platte County.
The Kansas City Police Department announced they responded to 63 accidents between 5 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. on Jan. 17. Of those, 35 were injury accidents.
One of the accidents KCPD North Patrol responded to included one of its own vehicles.
A tweet from the department said an officer was on the shoulder of Interstate 29 and Tiffany Springs Parkway in the northbound lanes at 6:30 a.m. putting out flares for another accident.
While that happened, another car lost control, slid and struck the police SUV as the officer was getting back inside. There were minor injuries from that incident.
Trash collection from the city in the Northland was delayed a day, to Saturday, as that crew was shifted to snow and ice removal duties, according to a press release from the city.
On the highways, the Missouri State Highway Patrol posted only two accidents that happened during the inclement weather time frame.
The first happened at 7:06 a.m. on Interstate 29, at mile marker 6.2 in the northbound lane.
A 2003 Chevrolet Silverado truck driven by Keith Hilt, 28, of Edwardsville, Kan., was following a vehicle too closely and when he applied his breaks, he had to swerve to avoid the vehicle. His truck spun around into another lane, which caused a 2000 Toyota Avalon driven by Pablo J. Ortiz, 22, of Kansas City, to swerve to his right to avoid an impact.
The two cars still struck and then the Silverado went off the roadway and struck a concrete barrier. Ortiz’s vehicle spun around and went into another lane and hit a 2010 Lexus 350 driven by Tekialah Z. Johnson, 45, of Kansas City, Mo.
The only person injured in the accident was Ortiz, who had minor injuries. He was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital on Barry Road.
Accident two was reported at 12:58 p.m., when Lauren M. Goolsby, 23, of Kansas City, was driving southbound on Interstate 29 near mile marker 8.4 when she lost control of her Lincoln Towncar and struck a 2014 Chevrolet 1500 pickup driven by Barney Vang, 33, of Kansas City, Kan.
After the collision, Goolsby’s car struck a concrete barrier and caught fire.
Both drivers went to hospitals via private vehicles for treatment, the MSHP reported. Goolsby went to Research Medical Center, while Vang went to Shawnee Mission Hospital.
Overall, from midnight, Jan. 17 through 8 p.m. that day, the MSHP Troop A responded to 240 calls, 84 slideoffs, 67 non-injury crashes and eight injury crashes, including the two in Platte County.
Another round of winter weather is expected on Wednesday, Jan. 22. The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory from the early morning hours until noon with a chance of up to three inches of snow and a light glaze of ice.
