West Platte football muddies its postseason picture with loss to Plattsburg

West Platte further muddied its postseason scenarios in a 35-26 loss to Plattsburg on Friday, Oct. 9 in Plattsburg, Mo. Still with the No. 2 spot in the current Class 1 District 7 standings, the Bluejays now sit in a three-way heat with Plattsburg and Mid-Buchanan for the No. 2 spot behind Wellington-Napoleon. West Platte beat Mid-Buchanan in Week 7 ahead of the Week 8 loss to the Tigers.

West Platte finishes the season at Lawson (5-3) on Friday, Oct. 16 and could conceivably end up anywhere from No. 2 to No. 4 when the district playoff starts.

In the loss to Plattsburg, West Platte (3-5, 2-4 KCI) took a pair of leads in the first quarter on two touchdown runs from running back Justin Rhodes. The Tigers scored the next 16 unanswered to go up 22-12, and Bluejays quarterback Brett Shepardson’s first touchdown run and two-point conversion early in the fourth quarter provided a glimmer of hope.

However, Plattsburg running back Jordan Kremer, who finished with 94 yards rushing on four carries, ran for scores of 33 and 40 yards to put the Tigers up 35-20. Plattsburg quarterback Daniel O’Connor threw for 223 yards, including a 16-yard score to Brad Gibson in the second quarter that coupled with a two-point pass put the Tigers up for good.

Shepardson finished with 190 yards on the ground and completed 5-of-10 passes for 60 yards. Rhodes ran for 98, and Tabaka added 53.
