The Kansas City Aviation Department gave members of the media a behind-the-scenes tour of the new KCI Airport terminal currently under construction alongside the existing airport.
Since breaking ground two years ago, crews have demolished and recycled 130,000 tons of materials from the former Terminal A and have installed more than 3,500 deep foundation piles and 12,000 pieces of structural steel.
More than 200 Kansas City area firms are working on the project with 117 of those being minority- and women-owned businesses.
Last week, crews started the installation of the new terminal’s elevators. The length of time for each elevator’s installation depends on its type, with passenger elevators taking seven weeks, while freight elevators take up to 16 weeks.
According to the aviation department, the approximately $1.5 billion project is expected to be finished by March 2023 and remains on time and on budget.
