The West Platte wrestling team has started its season off strong with a pair of impressive matches.
The Blue Jays showed out in their home opener by taking down Rock Port and Lafayette in the West Platte Triangular on Dec. 8 when West Platte finished the triangular with 48 points, while Lafayette ended with 30 points and Rock Port had 18 points. Cameron Williams had an impressive performance in the 160-weight class when the senior earned 12 points, which included a pin over Lafayette’s Pierce Robins.
In the 285-weight class, Macon McDonald pinned a pair of opponents – Rock Port’s Christian Sticken at 1:35 and Lafayette’s Quentin Garrett. Matthew Haynes also earned 12 points with two pins in the 182-weight class.
In the 195-weight class, David Brown and Lane Scott both were able to give West Platte six points each. Mckanan Reade pinned Rock Port’s Trenton Wallace at 19 seconds and Lafayette’s Tristan Flynn at 2:55 in the 132-weight class.
Anthony Depetre split a pair of 152-weight class matches when the Blue Jay pinned Rock Port’s Bracton Cook at 4:00 before Lafayette’s Jay Greiner pinned the 152-pound West Platte wrestler at 1:11. Josh Brown pinned a pair of opponents, including Lafayette’s Alex Pablo-Mendozaat 1:55 in the 145-weight class.
In the Coffman Memorial Tournament at Truman High School on Dec. 11, West Platte finished in fourth place. Kristen Crockett stepped up for the Lady Blue Jays with a first-place finish in the 135-weight class.
Williams was the only other West Platte wrestler to earn a first-place finish when the senior bested his 160-pound opponents. Peyson Chandler and McDonald both finished in second place in their weight classes, while Tristan Newkirk and Scott ended in third place and Brown was the fourth place finisher in the 285-weight class.
