The man accused of attempting to kick off a mass shooting incident on the Centennial Bridge to Leavenworth, Kan. on Wednesday, May 27 is at home in Houston Lake.
Jason R. Westrem, 37, has been charged in Leavenworth with attempted first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of aggravated endangering a child and four counts of discharging a firearm at an occupied vehicle.
Fort Leavenworth Master Sergeant David Royer spotted Westrem as he exited his vehicle and opened fire. Royer struck Westrem with his vehicle and held him pinned until police arrived.
Leavenworth police said Westram had multiple weapons and fired randomly at vehicles. Police received a call about 11 a.m. of shots fired on the bridge and initially believed the cause was road rage.
Westrem was hospitalized with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries and later released.
Due to the nature of his injuries, Westrem cannot be held in custody in any facility in Kansas or Missouri.
According to Major Erik Holland of the Platte County Sheriff’s Office, if he was arrested by the sheriff’s department, his need for medical care would make holding him impossible, and he cannot be extradited to Kansas due to his delicate condition.
Police are able to monitor his location and will consider options as the case winds through the courts.
Though Westrem faces no charges from the incident in Platte County, his concealed carry license was revoked in Platte County Circuit Court on Monday, July 20.
According to the judgment, Westrem was found as a fugitive from justice facing a no-bond arrest warrant in Leavenworth.
